Job Description
Responsibilities*Ensure all project activities are aligned with the overall goals of the Medical School and apply senior-level project management and engineering support to various maintenance and capital projects. The Facilities and Sustainability Engineer will apply senior-level project management and technical expertise in the following areas:
Position reports to the Director, Capital Projects, Medical School Facilities.
Position shall work closely with and collaborate with other Medical School Facilities groups such as Facilities Planning, Operations, Safety Services, and Workplace and Research Services (whom all report to the Sr Director, Medical School Facilities), as well as activities and priorities of Campus partners such as Operations and Maintenance engineers, Energy Management engineers, and Architecture, Engineering & Construction professionals, as they relate to Medical School initiatives.
Assures project goals, objectives and outcomes are aligned with, and supports, the strategic direction of the Medical School.
Provide engineering services in support of meeting the University?s carbon neutrality goals. Identify, develop, and support energy saving initiatives in conjunction with Energy Engineers assigned to Medical School Buildings.
Provide engineering support to the various maintenance and skilled trades groups to troubleshoot HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other building systems. Provide or manage engineering support to utilities and power plant operators and staff.
Provide site utility master planning support, feasibility assessments and study reviews for the needs of the Medical School buildings.
Provide critical reviews of project design and construction documents provided by consultants or other units and participate in design teams.
Support the Operations team with engineering information including but not limited to, shutdown impact information, triaging complex building issues, and provide critical building system information during building emergencies.
Participate in Capital Planning and Deferred Maintenance project planning and forecasting.
Prepare carbon reduction and sustainability initiative analyses, reports and communications as needed for executive review.
Lead a cohesive, Medical School Facilities sustainability program, including short- and long-term goals and initiatives.
Collaborate with institutional and campus stakeholders to coordinate and advance sustainability priorities across units.
Identify, assess, and prioritize opportunities to improve sustainability performance and outreach.
Lead sustainable and low-energy design projects within the built environment.
Evaluate engineering strategies related to material reuse, recycling, and carbon-emissions reduction.
Foster a culture of environmental sustainability among students, faculty, and staff through engagement, communication, and collaboration.
Required Qualifications*
Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical or related engineering field.
Registered as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Michigan, or the ability to obtain a State of Michigan registration within 12 months.
Registered Certified Energy Manager with the Association Energy Engineers(AEE).
Demonstrated 8 or more years of progressively responsible and expanding experience in project management, design, construction, installation, commissioning, and operations and maintenance of building facilities and utilities distribution systems.
Expert level experience and knowledge in the design and operation of HVAC systems, complex research and education environment.
Effective interpersonal and leadership skills used to interact with a diverse range of customers and to deliver exemplary customer service.
Excellent written and oral communication skills with attention to detail, and strong organizational skills.
Considerable knowledge of building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire, and energy codes, ASHRAE Standard 90.1, and other applicable regulations.
Expertise in building automation and instrumentation systems used to control facilities and utilities distribution systems, including program knowledge.
Experience in planning, operation, evaluation and distribution of large, chilled water and medium pressure steam systems.
Experience in planning and organizing work and directing work of others as required or assigned (such as drafters, design engineers, skilled trades, consultants and contractors).
