Summary

The Department of Medicine - Cardiology section at Baylor College of Medicineis seeking a competent, dependable, and patient-focused Medical Assistant II to support the delivery of high-quality patient care in a fast-paced ambulatory cardiology setting. This position provides both direct clinical patient care and clerical/administrative support while contributing to the daily operations and efficiency of the Cardiology clinical practice.

The Medical Assistant II works closely with cardiologists, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure patients receive timely, safe, and compassionate care. The position requires strong clinical skills, attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a busy outpatient environment.

Job Duties

  • Rooms and triages patients in preparation for cardiology visits, obtaining and documenting vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, weight, and other relevant clinical information.
  • Performs EKGs/ECGs and assists with cardiac diagnostic testing as ordered by the physician.
  • Obtains and documents patient medical histories and identifies the primary complaint or reason for the visit.
  • Performs medication reconciliation and accurately updates medication lists, allergies, and relevant clinical information in the EPIC electronic medical record.
  • Prepares examination rooms, instruments, and equipment for physicians and assists with procedures as needed.
  • Applies and provides patient instructions for ambulatory cardiac monitoring devices, including Holter monitors and event monitors.
  • Administers medications under the direction and order of the supervising physician and in accordance with established clinical protocols.
  • Performs point-of-care testing (POCT) and other routine clinical duties within the scope of the position.
  • Provides patients with appropriate instructions regarding medications, diagnostic testing, procedures, follow-up care, and general health management.
  • Conducts patient outreach calls and post-visit follow-ups as directed by the clinical team.
  • Maintains examination rooms, equipment, and clinical areas in a clean, safe, organized, and properly stocked condition.
  • Processes incoming and outgoing faxes and assists with medication prior authorizations.
  • Obtains and follows up on laboratory results, imaging/X-ray reports, hospital records, referral documentation, and other outside medical records.
  • Files, scans, and maintains patient medical records and clinical documentation in accordance with department procedures.
  • Sorts and distributes clinic mail, medical records, and other correspondence to the appropriate clinical or administrative personnel.
  • Supports the cardiology team with daily clinical operations and helps ensure efficient patient flow throughout the practice.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, AMCA, AAH, AAMP, or NPS).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.
