What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you passionate about your experience working in facilities and dream of using your knowledge and experience in Fire Protection Engineering? If so, you could be the Facilities Technologist we are seeking to join our team as the subject matter expert for inspection, testing and maintenance of fire protection systems!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Support Fire Protection engineers and perform facility and life-safety evaluations to determine fire risk and provide effective and efficient engineered solutions to meet applicable building and fire codes, regulations, and standards to mitigate risk.
  • Perform regular wildland fire assessments and assist in developing wildland fire mitigation plans.
  • Perform regular field inspections of active construction projects.
  • Act as a permit authorizing individual and issue hot-work permits.
  • Develop acceptance testing procedures and coordinate implementation.
  • Assist engineering in review and approval of architectural and fire sprinkler system drawings, engineering calculations (e.g., hydraulic, battery, voltage drop), and other design documents for new construction or modification of existing facilities.
  • Develop and implement fire prevention programs and procedures in an attempt to eliminate personnel injury and minimize property damage due to fire and explosion.
  • Develop appropriate equivalency and exemption requests.
  • Aid engineering in performing fire investigations.
  • Assist engineering in following code deficiencies identified during field inspections to closure.
  • Assist engineering in the classification of hazardous materials in accordance with NFPA 704.
  • Support engineering in data analysis and trending of fire water supply, inspection testing, and maintenance records.
  • Apply research to the design, development, construction, installation, and decommissioning of electrical, mechanical, civil, structural, and architectural elements.

This position requires the willingness to travel in support of work assignments; this position resides in Albuquerque, NM but could also provide support to other Sandia National Laboratory sites (e.g., California, Hawaii, and Nevada), as needed.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 50% of the time.

Salary Range:

$54,400 - $102,900

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • High School diploma or equivalent plus 3 or more years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
  • Active DOE L-Level security clearance.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Currently hold one or more of the following certifications: National Fire Protection Association Certified Fire Inspector (NFPA CFI-I and CFI-II), National Fire Protection Association Certified Fire Protection Specialist, International Association of Arson Investigation Certified Fire Investigator, or Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator.
  • Associate of Applied Science in Fire Science.
  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology
  • Understanding of applicable federal laws, regulations, building/fire codes, executive orders, and DOE Orders related to fire protection and highly protected risk concepts.
  • Understanding of intent and the independent and interdependent relationship between applicable building codes, fire codes, and national consensus codes and standards.
  • Experience using and interpreting the IBC and its referenced codes/standards (e.g. NFPA) applicable to a diverse set of operations that include hazardous, industrial, business, assembly, and storage occupancies.
  • Knowledge of the NFPA requirements associated with inspection, maintenance and testing of fire protection systems.

About Our Team:

The Building and Fire Safety Department at Sandia National Laboratories is a DOE Safety Management program that uses technical knowledge of risk-based analysis, fire dynamics, building construction and national consensus standards to implement a comprehensive corporate fire protection program so that Sandia's mission can be enabled while protecting Sandia workers, the environment, the public and DOE property from fire-related events.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
