Job Summary
Augusta University's Medical College of Georgia is conducting a national search for a distinguished physician leader to serve as the next Department Chair for Emergency Medicine. The successful candidate for Chair of Emergency Medicine will be a nationally recognized academic physician with strong leadership skills, a reputation for excellence, and record of achievement in clinical work, undergraduate and graduate medical education, research, and administration.
A key requirement is a track record of successfully leading and operating a busy Emergency Department in an Academic Medical Center. The next Chair must be passionate about seeking consensus, but not afraid to make difficult decisions or lead change. Serving as an advocate and trusted steward of the department, the new Chair will lead change and expansive growth to usher in a new and exciting era.
The new Chair will be an energetic visionary leader, who is capable of clearly articulating the unparalleled potential of the department, and who leads in a way others will follow. The new Chair must demonstrate transparency, a deep sense of professionalism, an unwavering ethical compass, and strong support for interdisciplinary and inter-professional collaboration.
Independent of the Chair's personal experience and productivity in research, the Chair will actively work to cultivate, broaden, and leverage the scholarship of the faculty, actively seeking out and promoting opportunities provided by the exceptional resources at MCG and Wellstar MCG Health. The Chair will demonstrate passion for the mentorship and development of faculty and fellows, including multidisciplinary efforts that will assure successful relationship building and alignment of a variety of stakeholders.
Ensuring the highest level of patient satisfaction, quality and safety, the Chair will demonstrate commitment to the clinical service needs of the department and Wellstar MCG Health, as well as the academic and research missions of the medical school.
This position is considered administrative faculty with rank at the rank of Professor and on a non-tenure track.
Responsibilities
  • Improved patient satisfaction in the Emergency Department
  • Lead efforts in working with cross-disciplinary programs such as telehealth/digital health.
  • Support and develop departmental education and research programs.
  • Oversight of recruitment, retention and professional development of departmental faculty.
  • Cultivate relationships locally, statewide and nationally.
  • Oversight of departmental administrative and budgetary operations.


Required Qualifications
Qualified candidates must hold a medical degree (MD, DO) or equivalent; are board certified in Emergency Medicine, as well as have additional certifications from the American Board of Medical Specialties for applicable subspecialty training; and are eligible for licensure in the state of Georgia and a faculty appointment at the Professor level in the Medical College of Georgia.
Professor- Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.

Shift/Salary/Benefits
This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.
The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.
Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.

College/Department Information
The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) is one of the nations largest medical schools by class size, with 304 students per class. The MCG educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, with regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state, and two four-year campuses located in Athens (in partnership with the University of Georgia) and in Savannah (in partnership with Georgia Southern University). MCG's expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across Georgia currently provide more than 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to small-town solo practices. MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to approximately 575 residents and fellows in 50 different Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Our researchers and clinicians focus on what most impacts the health of Georgia's and Americas children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine and genomics. Our physician faculty also share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 100 clinics and hospitals statewide.
The Department of Emergency Medicine is comprised of 78 total beds to include the adult and pediatric emergency departments as well as fast track and behavioral health spaces. It is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by emergency medicine residents and faculty - all of whom are board certified or residency trained in emergency medicine or pediatric emergency medicine. Pediatric emergency medicine faculty report to the Chair, Emergency Medicine. The adult and pediatric emergency departments are physically connected. The department is supported by air transport as well as ground transport for emergency care. The trauma portion of the emergency department serves as 13-county region including the CSRA. Our ED sees approximately 85,000 patients annually and includes both adult and pediatric emergency departments: Level 1 Trauma Adult, Level 2 Trauma Pediatric, Comprehensive Stroke Center, Certified Chest Pain Center. Roughly 30,000 of the 85,000 patients are pediatric. The department has multiple innovative programs including a dedicated Emergency Psychiatry service.
The department is also home to the Center of Operational Medicine (COM) which has earned a reputation as one of the foremost institutions in the nation for operational medicine training. The COM staff and instructors include highly experienced emergency physicians, emergency management specialists, and paramedics with strong backgrounds in prehospital critical care, military and law enforcement special operations, disaster medicine, international humanitarian assistance, and wilderness medicine. Through /ongoing operational activities with federal, state, and local agencies, as well as the Department of Defense, the COM continues to develop and deliver the most up-to-date operational medicine training available.
Our residency is a 3-year format and has 42 residents (14/yr). The program is an affiliated US Army residency and approximately half of our residency class are active-duty Army. This department is one of six Army training sites nationally for emergency medicine residents. The department has extensive educational support including: a state-of-the-art medical simulation laboratory, human and animal tissue labs, Education Innovation Institute, and Center for Ultrasound Education. Our research section complementing the academic missions of the department is supported by a PhD researcher and 2 research assistants.
