Laboratory Manager - Civil & Mechanical Engineering

Hiring Department
The University of Texas Permian Basin's College of Engineering & Sciences welcomes applications for the position of Laboratory Manager with our Civil & Mechanical Engineering

Salary Range
$68,000.00 depending on qualifications
Essential Functions
We are seeking a highly qualified and enthusiastic individual for the Laboratory Manager position for the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Department. This position manages the day-to-day operations of both Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering laboratories, ensuring a safe, clean, and well-organized environment. The role supports teaching and research by preparing labs. In addition, the department is currently in the process of setting up Civil Engineering laboratories. The laboratory manager will be responsible for obtaining equipment quotes, coordinating procurement and installation, and overseeing the setup and operational readiness of laboratory equipment and facilities.
1. Supervise the day-to-day laboratory activities, and handle administrative tasks to ensure
the lab runs efficiently.
2. Train and supervise students, on equipment use, lab procedures and technical/engineering
skills.
3. Manage and maintain lab equipment, including scheduling repairs and performing
preventative maintenance. This also includes ordering equipment and managing inventory
of supplies.
4. Assist the Chair in managing day-to-day tasks associated with the proper operation of
department laboratories.
5. Provide technical support for research and senior design projects and student participation
in regional and national competitions.
6. Participate in recruitment and outreach activities at regional schools and colleges.
7. Support recruitment and outreach events throughout the year, especially over the summer.
Those may include science fairs, K-12 events, and as variety of other events as needed.
8. Develop and update lab instructional manuals and safety modules to ensure alignment with
ABET accreditation standards, program learning outcomes, and evolving industry
practices
9. Perform routine and preventive instrument calibration, validation, and troubleshooting
10. Maintain a safe laboratory environment and coordinate with UTPB Safety and compliance
officers.
Required Qualifications
1. Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
2. Two (2) years of relevant industry Experience
3. Laboratory management experience at the university level.
4. Have the knowledge of laboratory procedures, instrumentation, and safety practices.
5. Ability to work independently.
6. Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
7. Ability to maintain an organized, clean, and safe working environment.
8. Ability to perform general maintenance tasks.
9. Familiarity with Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications
1. Ability to manage laboratories in both areas of Civil and Mechanical engineering.
2. A master's degree in engineering or engineering technology, or related field.
3. Teaching experience in education or industry.
4. Proven history of collaboration with students, faculty, and staff.
5. Oil and gas industry experience.
6. Experience developing and delivering professional training.
7. Experience with interdisciplinary engineering projects.
8. Experience with various engineering software packages.

Schedule
Generally, the normal work hours for the university are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 - 5:30 pm; Friday, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm with a one-hour lunch. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning, evening, and on weekends to meet the needs of the department. Hours worked may differ with some departments.
Standard Working Conditions
1. Able to lift various materials up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.
2. Able to bend, crouch, and reach continuously.
3. Physically able remain seated, frequently to continuously.
4. Able to remain standing up to 15% of the time.
5. Possesses dexterity abilities required to perform job duties including extensive keyboard work, operating office equipment, performing filing, and other job-related responsibilities that include extensive wrist and hand movement.
6. Standard working conditions may differ depending on department and occupation
