Job Description
OverviewThe Department of Applied Sciences, Technology, and Education (ASTE) at Utah State University invites applications for a 9-month position in the Business Education teacher preparation program and will begin August 1, 2026. Depending on qualifications, this position may be filled as either a non-tenure-track Professional Practice appointment or a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor.
The Professional Practice role carries a workload of 90% teaching and 10% service.
The tenure-track role includes 75% teaching, 20% research, and 5% service.
This position is based in Brigham City and serves a regional area that includes Box Elder, Weber, Davis, and Morgan Counties. Establishing faculty presence in this region strengthens program visibility and enhances support for students. While the position is rooted in the Brigham City region, it is part of a broader statewide system dedicated to serving students across Utah. The Department of Applied Sciences, Technology and Education delivers programs throughout the state, extending its reach to meet students wherever they are. As a faculty member within this system, individuals benefit from expanded teaching opportunities and the ability to engage with a diverse student population in meaningful and impactful ways.
This position directly supports the vision of the ASTE department’s focus on Career and Technical Education (CTE), which aim to prepare students for success through relevant and rigorous learning experiences aligned with workforce needs and connected to postsecondary opportunities. The Business Education program prepares future educators to teach business-related subjects at the junior high and high school levels. The program integrates core business concepts (e.g., accounting, finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, business communications, digital applications, web development, and related CTE fields) with pedagogical training, including teaching methods, clinical and student teaching experiences. The majority of the coursework is delivered in an online or hybrid format. Students are also admitted to the Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) in the College of Education and Human Services.
Candidates must have an earned graduate degree in Business Education, Secondary Teacher Education, Career and Technical Education, or a closely related field (e.g., business, career and technical education, workforce development, instructional technology, or related disciplines) by the date of appointment.
Responsibilities
This position serves as the lead faculty member for the USU Business Education program, providing strategic direction, coordination, and oversight of program initiatives.
Teaching the following Courses:
BSED 2510 - Orientation to Business Education
BSED 3150 - Methods for Business Education
BSED 3300 - Clinical Experience I in Business Education
BSED 4150 - Methods of Business, Finance, and Marketing Education
BSED 4300 - Clinical Experience II Business Education
BSED 5500 - Business Education Secondary Curriculum Seminar
BSED 5630 - Business Education Student Teaching
Develop and implement innovative curriculum, instruction, and assessment aligned with USBE Business Education, CTE standards and evolving workforce needs
Cultivate and sustain strong community engagement through partnerships with schools, businesses, and local organizations to promote the program, increase visibility, and create clear pathways for prospective students
Supervise students during field-based and clinical experiences to ensure effective learning and professional development
Integrate and support Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), such as DECA, FBLA, and Educators Rising, within coursework and experiential learning opportunities
Participate in service activities at the department, college, and professional levels
Collaborate with the Utah State University Brigham City campus, local schools, and community partners to advance business education and CTE initiatives, including outreach and industry engagement
Engage with faculty, staff, and service initiatives at the Utah State University Logan Campus
Contribute to the department, college, and university through service
Additional responsibilities may include:
Teaching graduate-level course ASTE 6470 Digital Tools for Learning in the ASTE Career and Technical Education M.S. and Ph.D. programs, depending on qualifications
For tenure-track faculty, additional expectations include:
Establish and maintain an active research agenda in Career and Technical Education (CTE), business education, or a related field, with a focus on publication in peer-reviewed journals
Seek and secure external funding (e.g., grants, contracts) to support research, program development, and workforce initiatives
Disseminate scholarly and applied work through presentations at regional, national, and/or international conferences
Mentor and advise students in academic, career, and professional development, including supervision of research or capstone projects
Qualifications
Professional Practice Assistant Professor (Non-Tenure Track)
Role 90% teaching 10% service:
Earned master’s degree in Business Education, Secondary Teacher Education, Career and Technical Education, or a closely related field with a focus in business education or teacher preparation. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of effective pedagogical practices and the ability to prepare and support preservice teachers, including instructional methods, assessment, and supervision of clinical or field-based experiences. Minimum of three years of teaching or instructional experience at the secondary (middle or high school) level or in a closely related educational or workforce training setting (e.g., Career and Technical Education, postsecondary instruction, or industry training).
Experience teaching in a variety of delivery formats and modalities, with emphasis on developing and implementing innovative courses
Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, administrators, and industry professionals
Experience with or knowledge of Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), such as DECA, FBLA, and Educators Rising
Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track)
Role 75% teaching, 20% research, 5% service:
Earned doctoral degree in Business Education, Secondary Teacher Education, Career and Technical Education, or a closely related field with a focus in business education or teacher preparation. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of effective pedagogical practices and the ability to prepare and support preservice teachers, including instructional methods, assessment, and supervision of clinical or field-based experiences. (completed by date of appointment)
Minimum of three years of teaching or instructional experience at the secondary (middle or high school) level or in a closely related educational or workforce training setting (e.g., Career and Technical Education, postsecondary instruction, or industry training).
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, faculty, administrators, and industry professionals
Experience teaching in a variety of delivery formats and modalities, including evidence of developing and implementing innovative courses
Evidence of, or strong potential for, developing a scholarly research agenda and extramural funding.
Experience with or knowledge of Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), such as DECA, FBLA, and Educators Rising
Preferred Qualifications (Both Tracks):
Evidence of effective teaching at the postsecondary level
Experience with online teaching and program delivery
Experience supervising clinical or student teaching experiences
Engagement with professional organizations in Business Education or Career and Technical Education
Additional Preferred Qualifications for Tenure-Track Candidates:
Established or emerging research agenda focused on Business Education, Career and Technical Education, or a closely related field
